Scotland — The Highlands Loop

July 7 – 15, 2026  |  Jeff & Holly
Mercedes C-Class  |  Pick up Glasgow Airport, drop Inverness Airport

Weather refreshed Jul 8 with real dated forecasts (Open-Meteo), per-location for each day — every date is now inside the reliable 7-day window. Wetter, cloudier start in Glasgow and the west coast (Days 1–2), then it dries out fast and stays largely rain-free through Skye and east to Inverness (Days 3–8), the last couple of days the warmest. Temps are the daytime high; the night figure is the overnight low.

A one-way south-to-north loop with no backtracking. On the road each day between 9 and 10a after breakfast. All drive times are Google-verified moving time; pad for stops. Highland roads run slower than the map says, especially the single-track sections on Skye.

Day-by-Day

Day 1 — Tue Jul 7 — Arrive Glasgow (Marriott)
Glasgow — Day: ~63°F, overcast and damp, ~89% rain chance  |  Night: ~58°F, mild, wet
Land 4:30p. Pick up the C-Class at GLA (~15 min into the city). Evening only, so keep it easy.
Do: Nothing ticketed — you land too late for Kelvingrove or the Clydeside Distillery (both close ~5–6p). Settle into the Marriott, then a short stroll around Finnieston / the SEC + Squiggly Bridge on the Clyde if you want to stretch your legs before dinner.
Dinner: Ox and Finch, Finnieston booked 6:45p — buzzy small plates, walkable from the hotel. A perfect low-key first night.
Day 2 — Wed Jul 8 — Glasgow to Isle of Eriska (via Doune & Luss)
Trossachs / Loch Lomond / Oban — Day: ~62°F, drizzle likely, ~87% rain chance  |  Night: ~54°F, cool, damp
Quick kilt-shop browse near George Square, then leave Glasgow 10:45a. Doune Castle, a quick Luss photo stop, then the world-famous Loch Fyne Oyster Bar for a late oyster lunch, on to Oban for whisky, then the private-island hotel.
Google-verified: ~152 mi / ~3 hr 43 min moving (Glasgow → Doune → Luss → Loch Fyne → Oban → Eriska). The Loch Fyne detour adds only ~5 min over the plain route — it loops naturally through Inveraray toward Oban. Day 2 route map: Glasgow to Isle of Eriska via Doune, Luss, and Loch Fyne
Late lunch: Loch Fyne Oyster Bar, Clachan, Cairndow (A83, head of Loch Fyne) — Scotland's most famous oyster bar, fresh from their own beds. Worth booking ahead for a ~2:15p table.
Dinner: On-property at Isle of Eriska (private island). Book table at check-in.
Timing reality check: With a 10:45a start this is a full day, so Luss is just a quick ~15 min pier photo stop. The Loch Fyne detour costs almost nothing (~5 min over the straight Luss→Oban run) because it loops through Inveraray and rejoins toward Oban. Oyster lunch ~2:15p, Oban for whisky ~4:50p, Eriska ~5:45p for a relaxed private-island dinner. Book Loch Fyne ahead — it's popular.
Day 3 — Thu Jul 9 — Eriska to Inverlochy Castle
Oban / Glencoe / Fort William — Day: ~66°F, overcast but dry, only ~6% rain chance  |  Night: ~56°F, mild, patchy mist Eriska→Oban 11.4 mi / 26 min  •  Oban→Glencoe 33.6 mi / 52 min  •  Glencoe→Fort William 16.3 mi / 28 min
Sights: Oban harbor + McCaig's Tower viewpoint, Glencoe Three Sisters viewpoint (Outlander opening-credits country).
Lunch (Oban): (1) Oban Seafood Hut — the famous green shack on the pier.   (2) Ee-Usk — sit-down seafood on the water.
Dinner: On-property at Inverlochy Castle. Book at check-in.
Optional — big-mountain add-ons (only if you want more time in the peaks):

Glencoe Three Sisters + Study viewpoint: the layby stops along the A82 through the glen are the classic dramatic photo spots — 15–30 min, zero detour, right on your route.

Glencoe Lochan loop: flat, easy 45–60 min walk through the woods with mountain reflections on the water. Trailhead 5 min off the A82 at Glencoe village.

An Torr / Signal Rock: short 30–40 min woodland loop, gentle, good if the tops are in cloud.

Nevis Range gondola (Aonach Mor): ride up for a Ben Nevis massif view without hiking — ~1–1.5 hr, 10 min north of Fort William. Great rainy-day backup since you're overnighting right under Ben Nevis.

Slot any of these into the Oban→Glencoe→Fort William afternoon — you have slack before dinner at Inverlochy.
Day 4 — Fri Jul 10 — Fort William to Skye / Flodigarry (via Glenfinnan)
Glenfinnan / Eilean Donan / Skye — Day: ~61°F, spells of light drizzle and low cloud, ~54% rain chance  |  Night: ~51°F, misty, damp
Depart 9:30a to catch the Jacobite steam train (the Harry Potter train).
Inverlochy→Glenfinnan ~16 mi / ~25 min  •  Glenfinnan→Eilean Donan ~57 mi / ~1 hr 25 min  •  Eilean Donan→Flodigarry 63.8 mi / 1 hr 40 min
Sights: Glenfinnan Viaduct (steam train crosses ~10:45–11a), Eilean Donan Castle.
Lunch (Kyle of Lochalsh): (1) Waterside Seafood Restaurant — harbor-front.   (2) Cafe at Eilean Donan visitor centre — quick and on-site.
Dinner: On-property at Flodigarry. Book at check-in.
Optional — mountain scenery on the drive (no extra detour, all on-route):

Glen Shiel / Five Sisters of Kintail: the A87 climbs through this towering ridge pass between Eilean Donan and Skye — arguably as jaw-dropping as Glencoe. Pull in at the Glen Shiel or Cluanie laybys for a 10–20 min photo stop.

Loch Shiel viewpoint (Glenfinnan): right by the viaduct — the long loch framed by peaks. 5–10 min while you're already there for the train.

Ratagan / Mam Ratagan viewpoint: short detour above Loch Duich for a top-down view of the Five Sisters, if the sky is clear.

These are drive-through/roadside stops, so they add scenery without eating into your Skye arrival time. Just budget an extra 20–30 min of stopping on an already-full transfer day.
Day 5 — Sat Jul 11 — Isle of Skye (based at Flodigarry)
Trotternish, Isle of Skye — Day: ~55°F, overcast but dry, only ~7% rain chance, windy on the ridges (gusts ~22 mph)  |  Night: ~54°F, mist. Bring a windproof layer.
Minimal driving. Everything's on your doorstep. Out ~9:30a.
Flodigarry→Quiraing 4.2 mi / 13 min  •  Flodigarry→Old Man of Storr 14.2 mi / 23 min
Sights: Quiraing (morning, before crowds), Kilt Rock + Mealt Falls (roadside, 15 min), Old Man of Storr (afternoon hike, ~2.5 mi round trip, steep first 30 min).
Lunch (Portree): (1) Cafe Arriba — relaxed, with a view.   (2) The Isles Inn or Sea Breezes — on/near the square.
Dinner: On-property at Flodigarry.
Day 6 — Sun Jul 12 — Skye to Inverness / Culloden House
Skye → Loch Ness → Inverness — Day: ~65°F, overcast but dry, only ~10% rain chance  |  Night: ~54°F, mild, cloudy
Depart 10a. Urquhart Castle booked 3:00p — leaves time for a leisurely Portree lunch.
Flodigarry→Portree ~40 min  •  Portree→Urquhart ~2 hr 10 min  •  Urquhart→Culloden House 21.6 mi / 42 min
Clock: 10a depart → ~10:40a Portree → lunch ~1 hr 40 min → ~12:25p on road → 3:00p Urquhart → castle + Loch Ness ~1.5 hr → ~4:30p depart → ~5:15p Culloden House.
Sights: Urquhart Castle + Loch Ness (optional cruise from the jetty).
Lunch (Portree): (1) Cafe Arriba.   (2) The Granary or Sea Breezes — seafood.
Dinner — Inverness night 1: On-property at Culloden House (grand country-house dining, easy after a travel day, no driving). Book at check-in.
Day 7 — Mon Jul 13 — Inverness area (based at Culloden House)
Inverness / Culloden — Day: ~63°F, morning fog then dry, ~0% rain chance  |  Night: ~46°F, cool and clear
Culloden Battlefield booked 11:00a. Relaxed morning at the hotel first.
Culloden House→Battlefield 3.3 mi / 8 min  •  Battlefield→Clava Cairns ~5 min
Clock: Leisurely breakfast → ~10:45a drive over → 11:00a Culloden Battlefield (~2 hr) → ~1:00p Clava Cairns (free, 45 min) → lunch → afternoon free.
Sights: Culloden Battlefield (THE Outlander site), Clava Cairns (inspiration for Craigh na Dun standing stones), optional Inverness town.
Lunch: (1) Cafe at the Culloden visitor centre — right there.   (2) The Kitchen Brasserie, Inverness — riverside, ~15 min.
Dinner — Inverness night 2: Cafe 1, 7:15p — quietly the best food in Inverness, excellent Scottish steaks & seafood, relaxed. ~15 min into town.
Day 8 — Tue Jul 14 — Culloden House to Courtyard Airport (via Glenmorangie)
Inverness / Tain — Day: ~70°F, morning fog then sunny breaks, ~3% rain chance  |  Night: ~53°F, cool and clear
Glenmorangie tour booked 2:30p in Tain (~45 min north). A there-and-back before the airport hotel.
Culloden House→Glenmorangie (Tain) ~45 min  •  Glenmorangie→Inverness Airport hotel ~40 min
Clock: Slow morning + checkout → drive into Inverness (~15 min) → 12:30p lunch at Rocpool → ~1:45p drive north to Tain (~45 min) → 2:30p Glenmorangie tour (~1.5 hr) → ~4:15p depart → ~5p Courtyard airport hotel → dinner at River House 7p.
Sights: Glenmorangie distillery (tallest stills in Scotland; smooth, floral Highland style).
Lunch: Rocpool, Inverness, 12:30p — riverside bistro, then drive north to Glenmorangie.
Dinner — Inverness night 3 (last night): River House, 7:00p — riverside on Greig Street, seafood-forward, one of Inverness's best. ~15 min from the airport hotel. Timing to the Courtyard doesn't matter — head straight to dinner.
Day 9 — Wed Jul 15 — Fly home
Inverness — Day: ~67°F, early fog then dry, only ~6% rain chance  |  early departure
Early INV → London → Denver. Drop the C-Class at INV (2 min from the Courtyard).

Dress reminder: Every dinner is casual — a nice sweater or blouse with clean trousers is more than enough, even at the castle hotels. Nothing on this trip is fancy. Pack for comfort and weather, not for dressing up.

Timing reality check: Your two fullest driving days are Jul 10 (Skye transfer with Glenfinnan + Eilean Donan) and Jul 12 (off Skye to Loch Ness, ~2 hr 46 min moving). Start both at 9–9:30a. Days 5 and 7 have almost no driving — those are your breathe days. Glenmorangie on Jul 14 is a real north-and-back detour on your departure eve, but it's the better whisky and worth it.
Final dinner plan: Night 1 (Jul 12) Culloden House in-house • Night 2 (Jul 13) Cafe 1 at 7:15p • Night 3 (Jul 14) River House at 7:00p. All casual — a sweater or nice top is plenty at every one.
